Kerala
Kerala is the home of Ayurveda as a medical tradition, not a spa menu. A supervised panchakarma stay here is two or three weeks of oil, rest, simple food and a slower clock.
Ayurveda has been taught and practised in Kerala for millennia, and the state licenses its physicians and hospitals. A serious stay is a programme, not a treatment: a consultation with a doctor, a diet of kichadi and vegetables, daily oil massages, herbal steam, yoga at dawn and a schedule with nothing else in it. Panchakarma, the cleansing programme, takes 14 to 21 days; shorter stays of a week offer rejuvenation without the full detox.
The setting helps. The backwaters of Alleppey and Kumarakom are a maze of lagoons and canals lined with coconut palms; the beaches of Varkala and Kovalam have cliffs and Ayurvedic resorts above them; the tea hills of Munnar rise to 2,000 metres. The monsoon from June to August is traditionally the best season for treatment because the air is cool and moist and the body is said to absorb the oils better.
Choose a certified centre, expect early nights, simple food and a great deal of rest, and bring a book. The change most people describe is not weight or skin but sleep.

Good to know
Tips for Kerala.
- Choose centres accredited by the Kerala government (Green Leaf or Olive Leaf classification) and with resident physicians.
- The monsoon season (June to August) is the traditional treatment season and the cheapest; October to March is dry and busy.
- A panchakarma programme means simple food, no alcohol and a lot of rest; it is not a holiday with treatments added.
- Combine a week of treatment with a houseboat night on the backwaters and two days in the tea hills of Munnar.
- Kochi, the old port city, is worth a day for its Chinese fishing nets and spice markets.
Frequently asked questions
What is panchakarma?
A traditional Ayurvedic cleansing programme of two to three weeks combining a prescribed diet, oil massages, herbal steam and specific procedures under a physician’s supervision.
Is Ayurveda scientifically proven?
Parts of it, such as oil massage, yoga, a plant-based diet and structured rest, have good evidence for wellbeing and sleep. Claims about curing diseases should be treated with caution; go for the rest, not the miracle.
How much does an Ayurveda stay in Kerala cost?
Full-board programmes at good centres cost between 100 and 250 euro a day including treatments and consultations, far less than comparable European stays.
