Sardinia
In the mountain villages of the Ogliastra men live as long as women, which happens almost nowhere else. The reasons are steep paths, goat’s milk, a glass of dark wine and a family that never lets go.
The Sardinian Blue Zone is a cluster of villages in the east of the island: Villagrande Strisaili, Arzana, Talana, Baunei, Urzulei, Seulo. Shepherds still walk five miles a day on slopes that would count as a workout anywhere else. The diet is peasant food: sourdough flatbread, pecorino and goat’s cheese, fava beans, chickpeas, fennel, tomatoes, olive oil, and one or two small glasses of cannonau, a red wine unusually rich in polyphenols.
The village is the medicine. Grandparents live with their families, are expected to work and are consulted. Laughter is loud. A traveller feels it within a day: the bar in the square, the invitation to a table, the walk that everyone takes after dinner. Add the Supramonte plateau, the Gola su Gorropu canyon and the beaches of Cala Goloritzé and Cala Mariolu, which are reached on foot or by boat and are among the finest in Europe.
Come in May, June, September or October. Walk every day, eat what the village eats, sit with the old men and do not rush a meal. The island will do the rest.

Good to know
Tips for Sardinia.
- Stay in the villages (Baunei, Urzulei, Villagrande) rather than the coast resorts; the Blue Zone is in the hills, and so are the tables.
- You will need a car and calm nerves on mountain roads. Distances are short, journeys are not.
- The famous beaches of the Golfo di Orosei are reached by boat from Santa Maria Navarrese or by serious hikes; both are worth it.
- Cannonau is drunk in small glasses with food, never as an evening habit. Copy that, not the cliché.
- September is the sweet spot: warm sea, empty trails, grape harvest and the first mushrooms.
Frequently asked questions
Where exactly is the Sardinian Blue Zone?
In the mountainous east of the island, in the Ogliastra and Barbagia regions around Villagrande Strisaili, Arzana, Talana, Baunei, Urzulei and Seulo.
Why do Sardinian men live so long?
Researchers point to daily walking on steep terrain, a plant-heavy peasant diet with goat and sheep dairy, moderate red wine with meals, strong family ties and a culture that keeps elders active and respected.
Do I need to be a strong hiker?
No. The villages themselves are hilly enough for a daily workout. The canyon and beach hikes are optional and can be replaced by boat trips.
