South Tyrol

Where Austria meets Italy the mountains are the Dolomites, the valleys grow apples and wine, and the hotels have taken the spa more seriously than anywhere in Europe.

Longevity Index 85 · Merano and the Dolomites

South Tyrol has turned Alpine health into an art form. Merano has been a climatic spa town since Empress Sisi wintered there in the 1870s, and its modern thermal baths, the Tappeiner promenade above the town and the mild valley climate still draw people who want to walk in the sun in November. Above the valleys rise the Dolomites, a UNESCO landscape of pale towers and high meadows where the Alpe di Siusi, the largest alpine pasture in Europe, offers days of gentle walking at 2,000 metres.

The hotel culture is the surprise. Family-run houses with saunas, pools, hay baths, herbal steam rooms and half-board menus built on local food: dumplings, speck in moderation, barley soup, mountain cheese, apples, Vinschgau rye bread, a glass of Lagrein. Törggelen in autumn, the walk from farm to farm for new wine and roasted chestnuts, is a social event and a workout at once.

Come in June for the meadows, September for clear skies and the chestnut season, or winter for snowshoe walks and the sauna afterwards. Stay a week in one hotel, walk every day, and let the spa close each day.

Good to know

Tips for South Tyrol.

  • Merano is the base for spa and mild-weather walking; the Val Gardena or the Alpe di Siusi for serious hiking. A week can do both.
  • The hay bath (Heubad) is a local tradition: you lie wrapped in warm fermenting mountain hay for twenty minutes. Try it once.
  • Törggelen season runs from October to November in the Eisack valley: walking, chestnuts, new wine.
  • The train from Munich or Verona to Bolzano is easy; hotels arrange transfers and many offer free local buses.
  • Book spa hotels early for September and the Christmas weeks.
