Marbella
The Costa del Sol has the mildest winter on the European mainland, a seafront promenade that runs for miles and a concentration of longevity and fasting clinics that makes it the place to combine a check-up with a beach.
Marbella is where medical longevity met the Mediterranean. The town sits between the Sierra Blanca and the sea, with the mountain of La Concha behind it and a promenade that runs from the old town to Puerto Banús and on to San Pedro. The climate is the argument: 320 days of sun, winter days of 17 degrees, sea swimming from May to November and a walking and padel culture that keeps the retired population unusually fit.
The clinics are the other argument. Therapeutic fasting was practised here long before it became fashionable, and today the coast between Marbella and Málaga hosts clinics for supervised fasting, preventive diagnostics, cardiovascular and metabolic check-ups and recovery programmes with medical staff. A week can combine morning tests with afternoon walks and evenings of grilled fish at a chiringuito on the sand.
Come between October and June; summer is hot and crowded. Stay on the seafront or in the old town, walk the promenade every morning, hike La Concha once, and let the clinics do what a normal holiday cannot: tell you where you stand.

Good to know
Tips for Marbella.
- October to May is the season for health travel here: warm days, cool nights, empty beaches, open clinics.
- The old town (Casco Antiguo) is the best base without a car; San Pedro and Estepona are quieter alternatives along the coast.
- Book clinic programmes months ahead, especially fasting weeks in spring.
- The promenade is the free gym: most people walk it daily, and it runs for more than ten kilometres.
- For hiking, the Sierra Blanca and the Sierra de las Nieves natural park are an hour away and rarely crowded.
Frequently asked questions
Why is the Costa del Sol popular for longevity clinics?
A mild year-round climate, easy flights from all of Europe, an established medical infrastructure and a tradition of therapeutic fasting clinics that dates back decades.
Is Marbella only for the wealthy?
The image is glossy, but the promenade, the beaches, the mountains and the old town cost nothing, and mid-range hotels are plentiful outside July and August.
What is a chiringuito?
A beach restaurant on the sand. Grilled fish, salads and rice dishes: the Mediterranean diet served with your feet in the sand.
