Ubud
Bali’s hill town has more yoga studios per street than anywhere on earth, but its real medicine is older: rice terraces to walk, temple water to bathe in and a calendar that stops for ceremony.
Ubud earns its reputation. The town is a network of ridges and river gorges wrapped in rice terraces, and every morning at seven the studios fill with people who arrived for a week and stayed for a month. Retreat culture here is mature: yoga, breathwork, plant-based cooking, silent stays and Balinese healing traditions can all be found within a short drive, from bare-bones ashrams to hotels with infinity pools above the jungle.
The Balinese themselves keep a different rhythm, built around offerings, temple days and family compounds where four generations live together. A morning walk on the Campuhan ridge, a purification bath at Tirta Empul, a market breakfast of tropical fruit and tempeh, a massage for the price of a coffee at home: the day fills itself with unhurried things.
Come in the dry season from April to October, stay ten days to two weeks, choose one retreat or none, and leave the scooter at the hotel at least every second day. Ubud works best on foot.

Good to know
Tips for Ubud.
- Ubud is inland; for a beach week combine it with the east coast (Amed) rather than the crowded south.
- Book retreats early for July and August; May, June and September are quieter and equally dry.
- Stick to bottled or filtered water and peeled fruit until your stomach adjusts.
- Dress modestly at temples; sarongs are provided at the entrance.
- The best rice terrace walks start at dawn. By ten the light is harsh and the paths are busy.
