Longevity Clinics & Check-ups
A longevity clinic does one thing a resort cannot: it measures. Blood, heart, lungs, muscle, bone and metabolism in a week, with a plan afterwards and the sea or the mountains outside.
Medical longevity has moved from sci-fi to a booking form. A serious programme starts with the boring, high-value tests: a full blood panel including lipids and apolipoprotein B, glucose and HbA1c, blood pressure, a body composition scan (DEXA), a cardiorespiratory fitness test (VO2max), grip strength, a cardiac check and, depending on age, cancer screening. What it does with the results matters more than the results: a clear plan for movement, food, sleep and, where needed, medication, reviewed a year later.
The best places pair the diagnostics with a setting that helps you act on them. The Costa del Sol has clinics between the sea and the mountains; the Engadin and South Tyrol combine assessments with altitude and walking; Loma Linda offers hospital-grade preventive medicine within a Blue Zone; Okinawa and Kyoto add Japan’s screening culture. Beware of clinics that lead with supplements, infusions and expensive unproven therapies. The measurements are the product; the plan is the value.

Good to know
Before you book.
- Ask for the test list in writing before booking and compare it with what a good general practitioner would order.
- VO2max, grip strength, DEXA and apolipoprotein B are the four numbers that predict the most; make sure they are on the list.
- Be sceptical of programmes built around infusions, stem cells or supplements without evidence.
- Book a follow-up in twelve months. A single measurement is a photo; two are a direction.

What should a longevity check-up include?
At minimum: a full lipid panel with apolipoprotein B, blood glucose and HbA1c, blood pressure, body composition, a cardiorespiratory fitness test, grip strength, a cardiac assessment and age-appropriate cancer screening. Plus a plan.
Are longevity clinics worth the money?
The measurements are worth it if they change what you do. The luxury around them is optional. A good general practitioner can order most of the tests for a fraction of the price; the clinic adds time, interpretation and a plan.
What is VO2max and why does it matter?
The maximum rate at which your body uses oxygen during exercise, a measure of cardiorespiratory fitness. It is one of the strongest single predictors of longevity and it can be improved at any age.
