Where your steps take you

Walk the World

Enter your daily steps and height, and the tool converts a year of walking into kilometres and into a journey between the fifteen destinations on this site. Then it tells you how far you still have to go.

Ten thousand steps a day is roughly 2,800 kilometres a year, which is the distance from the Engadin to Ikaria and back. Set your steps, choose a starting point and see which destinations a year of walking reaches.

Stride length is estimated from height, distance from steps and days, and destinations are ranked by great-circle distance from your starting point. It is a game with a serious core: the daily steps that keep you alive are also a journey, and seeing it as one keeps people walking.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is the distance?

Stride length varies with pace and terrain, so treat the kilometres as an estimate within about ten percent.

Is 10,000 steps the right target?

Large studies show most of the benefit between 7,000 and 10,000 steps a day, with further gains at higher counts for younger people. Brisk steps count more.
